*sigh* this is just another in hotmail vs Gmail vs some other webmail system..

personally I just wish microsoft would quit being petty when they 'launch ' products or services.
Petty? yup. take for example windows live.com not allowing you to use a @gmail.com domain as Primary email address.
Oh the error message is innocuous enough pert or a "reserved domain" Um Duh all domains are that.
This is the same thing MS has done for years and years.
AKA "DOS ain't done till Lotus won't run"
This ain't new or will it be the last time either.
Pretty darn petty I say.

Besides this has _nothing_ to do do with who's copying who. It comes down to bucks. Ad Bucks. Period. Something MS wants desperatly

Hi guys...
anyone else on gmail having problems ?
gmail is fine on adsl, but on my 3g card i can surf net no problem, talk on google talk no problem, but i cannot reply to any gmail mail. also cannot compose and send attachments. can recieve mail fine.
thought it was my beta firefox im using so tried IE but still same problem.
sometimes can reply to a mail but not always, especially if there is an attachment in it...
but gmail is fine on adsl so i know its not gmail themselves. 2 friends have also complained about their gmail on 3g today..

Windows Live Mail is a shot at an implementation of a nice looking Outlook 2003 in a browser. If any of you have used outlook web access off your company's exchange server you'll know what I mean. Outlook web access looks and works almost exactly like Outlook 2003. Live mail just looks more prettier (read more consumer based).
Live mail is nice but gmail wins for the sole reason that gmail is far more adapted to the browser environment. Any long time gmail user will testify to this.
It groups your e-mails into conversations, and it loads instances of every single correspondence you've had with a contact in little snippets. Of course all this is subjective, it all comes down to you checking both out for yourselves and coming to a conclusion.

I think I beg to differ. Windows Live may be doing an excellent job with e-mail -- but keeping Hotmail, as it plainly sucks and is different to Windows Live, out of question (despite its usership, since it wasn't exactly Hotmail which launched this feature) -- me, and millions of others haven't tried Windows Live. So, why should we care? If a product that I haven't tried launches a new feature, and a product I *have* tried (and come to love) launches the same feature, will I not care about the one I've tried and that I love?

Hotmail vs. GMail (which what I personally find is different to Windows Live Mail vs. GMail) is another thing, let's look at the facts. Hotmail has more users than GMail but that is changing. Out of their usership, Hotmail has more of the consumer, average Joe market, while GMail more of the professional, business market. Keeping which one out of these two is better completely out of the question, who exactly will care about the "Custom Domains" feature (saying it belongs to Hotmail)? The consumers (Hotmail), who, may I remind you, do not have a domain or website let alone a usership of people having e-mail addresses on their website, or business people (GMail) who use GMail on a daily basis but not for their work-related e-mail which routes to their company's domain.

Yes, it's true that MSN, Hotmail, Windows Live Mail, whichever one we're talking about may have much more users, infact 100 or 1000 times more than GMail, but the real users who need this kind of a feature belong to GMail.

Of course, whatever I said is from what I personally know, have noticed and seen. You may have seen a different side of this story where business people use Hotmail and consumers use GMail, and where Hotmail is the real leader, but what we're talking about here, when we say which company is doing a better job with e-mail, is the market leader and which one's users will actually care about this feature, is the business market, which in my opinion GMail is the leader of, and is what most business people like and would love to use to manage their corporate e-maill. And I think I speak for all business people who use GMail when I say this.

Actually, Hotmail is the market leader by hundreds of millions, and if you haven't tried out Windows Live Mail, you really can't speak as to which company is doing a better job with e-mail. So, if the leader in webmail is doing hosted email, that is a bigger deal than smaller fish Gmail, which is used by so much less people but gets all the buzz.

I'm not saying that Gmail is worse than Hotmail, just that Scoble is right when he points out the coverage of moves by Google is disproportionate to the coverage of same features by Microsoft, even in areas where Microsoft is the market leader.
