Actually before YouTube was acquired, the founder was having a hard time coping with the operational costs and was literally paying off salaries using his credit card. If Google didn't come for the rescue, they would be probably acquired for the cheap. There was some relationship as Steven Chen and Larry were ex school mates previously. That relationship was probably the reason for the acquisition. In any case, it has been a good buy.
