Actually, I think that the growth Facebook is currently experiencing is due mostly to the new platform, which has added utility to a site that, for many, served no real important purpose previously. While the addition of so many applications to try may have sparked a frenzy and resulted in convoluted profile pages initially, I have a feeling that most mature users will eventually discard those that don't really provide added functionality.
It is strange to me that anyone would not find at least one useful application.
