DISQUS

Rev2.org: Automattic Acquires IntenseDebate. Any Comments?

I agree with "One thing DISQUS has going for it, is the comments you currently have on your site will not transfer over, so it would seem unlikely current users will switch." Right now DISQUS is #1 in third party commenting systems (says Compete) and I think that it will stay that way. DISQUS has some of the easiest implimentation of any third party service and as the number of blogging platforms grows (Tumblr, Posterous, etc) their customer base will only grow.

I posted a comment on the DISQUS blog that explains why I think they will be fine.

Are you considering changing your site's system at all? It's usually the case that increased usage is a mandate for improvements and the fickle viewers of blogs can be turned away simply because you use a different commenting system.

I see your points about the DISQUS folks being everything a growing web service needs to be but when your faced with competitors who have access to a community like WordPress's you need more than just doing a single job well to combat such huge brute numbers.

I agree, and I use disqus on the pizza site I have, and find it awesome to use. I do not want to lose all my comments on the site so I know as of now I will not be swtiching. One thing that would make disqus better, would be to have the comments more search engine friendly. I would like my comments to appear in certain keyword searches!

Disqus seems to be much more ambitious in the scope of their functionality.

IntenseDebate also stands out because it allows you to easily switch away from the service whenever you want to. You can just export your data and import it back into your native blogging software's comments database....
